NJ Vehicle Lettering Law

What New Jersey commercial vehicles are required to display.

New Jersey requires identification on commercial vehicles, and the requirement is easy to fall foul of by accident. Getting it right is inexpensive; getting stopped for it is not.

What the job involves

New Jersey law (N.J.S.A. 39:4-46) requires commercial vehicles to display the owner’s name and municipality on both sides — confirm current letter-height and weight thresholds with the NJ MVC., legible from a reasonable distance in daylight, along with the identifying registration information required for the class of vehicle. Vehicles operating under federal motor carrier rules also carry USDOT numbers, and trades with state licensing — home improvement contractors, plumbers, electricians, HVAC and others — have their own display requirements for license numbers.

The practical questions we get asked are always the same: how big do the letters need to be, does a magnetic panel count, does it have to be on both sides, and what about a pickup with a cap. Letter height and placement are what enforcement actually looks at, and lettering that is too small, low-contrast, partly obscured by a ladder rack or peeling at the edges is what draws attention.

How we do it

We are a lettering company, not a law firm, so treat this page as orientation rather than legal advice, and confirm specifics for your class of vehicle and trade licensing with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission or your own counsel. What we can do is make sure what goes on the truck is correctly sized, permanently applied, high contrast and positioned where an inspector expects to find it.

Most compliance lettering is a same-visit job. applied at your yard, with the option to add your phone number and trade while we are there so the truck starts earning its keep.

Included in NJ compliance lettering

  • Owner or lessee name, both sides
  • Required registration identification
  • USDOT numbers where applicable
  • Trade license number display
  • Correct letter height and contrast
  • Permanent vinyl instead of magnets
  • Placement clear of racks and boxes
  • Same-visit compliance jobs

How mobile lettering works

STEP 1

Call or send a photo

Tell us the vehicle, the wording and roughly when you need it. A photo of the truck answers most of our questions in one shot.

STEP 2

Approve the proof

We lay the design out on a template of your actual vehicle and send it back for approval. Nothing is cut until you say yes.

STEP 3

We come to you

We arrive at your yard or job site with everything needed, prep the panels and apply the graphics. Most jobs are done while the truck stays parked at your yard.

NJ Vehicle Lettering Law — questions we get asked

Is this legal advice?

No. We letter trucks for a living and this page is general orientation. Confirm requirements for your vehicle class and trade license with the NJ MVC or your attorney.

Do magnetic signs satisfy the requirement?

Magnets come off, get stolen and hide damage underneath. Permanent lettering is the safer answer and costs little more.

How large should the letters be?

Requirements vary by vehicle class. We size lettering to be clearly legible at a distance in daylight, which is the practical standard.

Can you letter my truck today?

Often yes. Call and ask what is open — compliance lettering is quick, and we come to you.

How big do USDOT numbers have to be?

Legible from 50 feet in daylight, and the rule sets a two-inch minimum letter height. In practice we size them larger on a big panel so they read clearly from the distance an inspector or a camera will read them.

Which name goes on the truck?

The legal name or a single trade name of the carrier operating the vehicle, as shown in its FMCSA registration. If you are leased to another carrier, that changes who is named.

Do both sides need marking?

Yes — the marking must appear on both sides of the vehicle.

Does a magnetic sign count?

The rule concerns legibility and content rather than mandating permanent application, but magnetics fall off, get stolen and leave marks on paint. For a vehicle that is marked every working day, applied vinyl is the more reliable choice.

DOT number lettering: what the rules require

Federal rules require a commercial motor vehicle to display the operating carrier’s legal name or single trade name and its USDOT number on both sides, in letters that contrast sharply with the background and are legible from 50 feet in daylight while the vehicle is stationary. Our compliant truck lettering puts the name and numbers on in one visit, and fleet DOT numbering keeps every unit consistent.

That requirement comes from 49 CFR § 390.21, which applies to self-propelled commercial motor vehicles operated by a motor carrier subject to the federal safety regulations. The marking must be the name of the carrier actually operating the vehicle, which is not necessarily the name on the door of the business that owns it — a distinction that catches out owner-operators leased to a carrier.

Whether the rule reaches you at all depends on your operation: vehicle weight rating, what you are hauling, whether you carry passengers, and whether you cross state lines. New Jersey also operates intrastate registration and inspection requirements of its own through the MVC. The official guidance linked below is the place to confirm your own case; anything a sign shop tells you, including us, should be checked against it.

What we can be definite about is the execution. We size the lettering to the rule rather than to the look, place it where it is visible on both sides, and use contrasting color rather than a tonal match that reads as stylish and fails at 50 feet. If you ask us for something that would not comply, we will say so before it is cut.

How we do it at your location

Mobile lettering means the sign shop travels instead of the vehicle. We cut and prepare the graphics before we leave, then apply them at your yard, driveway or job site — so the truck is off the road for hours rather than days.

The order matters more than most people expect. Everything that can be done away from your vehicle is done first: the layout is proofed, the film is printed or cut, and the panels are weeded and taped ready to hang. That is the slow part, and it happens at the shop.

What happens at your address is the part that needs the vehicle present — cleaning and de-greasing the panels, positioning and hinging the graphics, squeegeeing them down, trimming around handles, rivets and body lines, and post-heating the edges so they stay put. How long it takes depends on the vehicle and how much goes on it, and we give you an estimate with the quote.

Temperature is the one thing that can move a booking. Vinyl adhesive needs the panel warm enough to bond properly, so in deep winter we work around the weather rather than through it. If a job cannot be done safely outdoors on the day, we say so rather than applying film that will lift in a month.

    • Send photos of the vehicle and the wording you want.
    • We proof the layout on your actual vehicle, not a generic outline.
    • You approve it — nothing is cut before you do.
    • We come to you; the panels are cleaned and the film applied.
    • The truck stays at your yard while we work.
