What customers actually mention

After three generations the compliments fall into the same few categories, and none of them are surprising. The first is time. Contractors tell us repeatedly that not losing a truck for two days is worth more than any discount a drop-off shop could offer, because a van sitting in somebody else’s lot is a van not generating revenue. When we letter trucks at the customer’s own yard, the downtime of a shop drop-off never happens.

The second is how the work holds up. Customers who came to us after a bad experience elsewhere usually describe the same failure: lettering that looked fine for a season, then faded, cracked or started peeling at the corners. That is almost always cheap calendared vinyl. Premium cast film from Avery, 3M or Orafol costs a little more up front and then behaves for seven or more years, which is why we do not stock the alternative.

The third is the proof. Seeing the layout on a picture of your own truck before anything is cut removes the part of the process that makes people nervous. Nobody has to imagine how it will look, and nobody discovers on installation day that the logo lands on a door handle or that the phone number is too small to read from another lane.

The fourth comes up years later, at trade-in or lease return: graphics that come off cleanly, with no baked-on adhesive and no ghost outline in the paint. Fleet managers care about this more than anyone, because it is the difference between a clean return and a deduction.

How to judge a lettering shop before you hire one

Ask four questions and you will learn most of what matters. Do you come to me, or do I bring the truck to you? What film are you using, and is it cast or calendared? Will I see a proof on my actual vehicle before you cut? And what happens when I want this removed in five years? A shop that answers those clearly is a shop that has done the work long enough to have opinions about it.

One more worth asking: will the truck I buy in three years match the ones you are lettering today? If the answer involves starting the design over, the fleet will drift out of alignment. We store a documented spec — layouts, colors, letter heights and placement — precisely so vehicle number nine looks like vehicle number one.

Leave us a review

If we lettered your truck, wrapped your van or built your sign, a review helps other New Jersey business owners find us. Google and Facebook reviews carry the most weight, and it takes about two minutes. Mentioning your town and the vehicle you had done is genuinely useful to the next person reading it, because a plumber in Bergen County wants to know we work in Bergen County.

The screenshots above are messages and posts customers sent us directly over the years. We are in the process of collecting named, written reviews to publish here alongside them — if you have worked with us and are willing to be quoted, call the shop and we will make it easy.

    What customers consistently mention

The two things that come up most often are that the truck did not have to leave the yard, and that the price quoted from a photograph was the price charged after the work.

Both are consequences of the same thing: quoting from a photograph of the actual vehicle rather than a category. When the layout is proofed on your truck before anything is cut, there are no surprises about coverage, and there is nothing to renegotiate when we arrive.

The third recurring comment is about longevity — customers coming back years later to add a vehicle, and the new one matching the old one. That is what a held fleet specification is for.

    Leaving a review

If we have lettered something for you, a review helps other New Jersey businesses work out whether a mobile sign shop suits how they operate. It matters more for a business like ours than star ratings usually do, because most people have never used one.

What helps a future customer most is the specific: what the vehicle was, what county you are in, how long it took, and whether the downtime worked out the way you expected.

What we do when a job is not right

We come back and fix it. A vinyl graphic that lifts, bubbles or fails within the film’s expected life is our problem, not yours, and we return to the vehicle rather than asking you to bring it anywhere.

Almost every genuine failure in applied vinyl traces to one of three things: the surface was not clean enough, the film was wrong for the shape it was asked to cover, or it went on in the wrong conditions. All three are the shop’s responsibility, which is why a callback is not a negotiation.

The exceptions are the ones any honest shop names up front. A pressure-washer lance held close to an edge will lift film that would otherwise have lasted years. Fresh paint that has not fully cured outgasses through the adhesive. A panel repaired with filler and rattle-can paint will release the paint, not the vinyl. We will tell you if we can see one of those risks before we start.

Because we travel to the customer anyway, a callback costs us a visit rather than costing you a day off the road. That is the main practical reason a mobile shop can afford to be relaxed about fixing things.

How to judge a sign shop before you hire one

Ask three questions: where the work happens, what film they use, and what happens if something lifts. A shop that answers all three plainly is usually the one that will still answer the phone in two years.

The last one matters more in New Jersey than the brochures suggest. A graphic that performs beautifully in a mild climate spends its winters here going through freeze-thaw cycles and road salt, and its summers on a dark panel that gets far hotter than the air temperature. That is a materials decision, and it is the one most often made badly.

    • Where does the work happen — your yard or their unit, and how many days is the vehicle off the road?
    • Which film, and cast or calendared? The answer should be a specific product, not “commercial grade”.
    • What is the expected life on the surface you actually have, not in ideal conditions?
    • Who fixes a lifted edge next spring, and is there a charge for the visit?
    • Will they tell you if the design you asked for will not comply with the marking rules?
    • Can they show you work on a vehicle like yours, in the weather you actually work in?

    Questions about reviews and references

Can I speak to a previous customer?

Yes. Ask when you call and we will put you in touch with someone running a similar vehicle, ideally near you.

Do you take down bad reviews?

We cannot, and would not want to. What we do instead is answer them, and where the complaint is fair, fix the job.

How long have you been doing this?

The business has been lettering vehicles from Chester since 1940, through three generations of the same family. More about us.

    Do you guarantee the work?

We stand behind both the application and the film. If a graphic fails within the material’s expected life for the surface it is on, we come back and redo it.
